More Aging Myths and the Roots of Depression

January 19, 2025 — Episode #55

Recording from American Family Radio’s headquarters, Jerry and Becky Drace wrap up their look at aging myths and open a new conversation about depression in senior adults.

After finishing out the list of myths — including the ideas that IQ inevitably drops with age and that older people are unproductive — they turn to Scripture’s most honest accounts of depression, in the stories of Job and Hannah, to show that even people of deep faith can spiral into despair. They outline early causes of depression in seniors, including the loss of family members, fear of being abandoned, and physical issues like malnutrition or undiagnosed urinary tract infections that can be mistaken for cognitive decline. The episode opens with prayer for the incoming presidential administration and a mention of a longtime friend of the couple now serving in a U.S. ambassador role, and closes with Becky sharing how her cancer journey became the seed for her book, “The Bright Side of Blue.”

Topics discussed:

  • Wrapping up five common myths about aging
