Jerry and Becky Drace turn to an old farming image — the ox yoke — to explain why the teenage years are such a critical window for shaping character. It’s a picture of discipline that binds a stronger, more mature guide to a younger one still learning to walk a straight path.

The Draces trace the idea back to Lamentations 3:27, “It is good for a man to bear the yoke in his youth,” describing how a lead ox trains a younger one to walk a straight furrow, much like Jesus described His own yoke as easy because He walks the straight path Himself. They discuss who should carry that yoke in a family, ideally a godly father as spiritual leader, while spending real time honoring single mothers raising children alone and urging men in the church not to shirk the responsibility of mentoring a boy who needs a strong Christian influence. Jerry recalls being away frequently for ministry travel early in their marriage, and how he and Becky worked to make sure he was still present for the moments that mattered most to their children.

They also share lighter stories, including meeting a woman with five children during a medical appointment and an old story about a family with twenty-five children, to make the point that family size doesn’t change the calling to disciple every child in the Word. Jerry recounts a teenage boy who once told him he was running away to join the Marines just to escape his parents’ rules, using it to illustrate that every stage of life carries its own “drill sergeant” of discipline. The couple return often to the idea that God’s Word has to sit at the center of the yoke, the thing keeping parent and child moving in the same direction, and close with thoughts on staying consistent as parents, trusting God with their children’s future in an unpredictable world, and why they believe grandparenting, not parenting, is the truest test of how well the discipleship stuck.
