Parenting Your Parents, Part 2: Practical Steps for Caring with Dignity

November 1, 2026 — Episode #145

Before you place a parent in a care facility, visit at night as well as during the day. It tells you more about the care than any tour will.

Jerry and Becky continue their series on parenting your parents with the emotional side of aging and then a practical plan. They talk about the fears older adults carry about moving into a care facility, a painful story of a man whose family left him there and never returned, and how churches can adopt a nursing home and bring real companionship to residents who feel forgotten. The hosts then lay out three actions for adult children: address common aging issues with sensitivity, such as driving and the loss of independence that comes with giving up car keys; gather medical records, medications, and emergency contacts in one place; and put home safety measures in place, from medical alert devices to ramps to kitchen safety. Throughout, they urge listeners not to be bossy or authoritarian, and to protect a parent’s dignity. They also remind listeners of a Holy Land trip planned for February 2027.
