Soft Words Reveal a Tender Heart

May 19, 2024 — Episode #20

In this week’s episode, Jerry and Becky Drace focus on tone, arguing that how something is said often matters more than what is said.

They contrast soft, measured speech with harsh or sarcastic words, pointing to Jesus’s own restraint in raising his voice and the story of Elijah hearing God in a “still, small voice” rather than in wind, earthquake, or fire. They share a moving memory of a man who, decades into adulthood, realized he had never once heard his father say “I love you,” and talk about the importance of fathers praying aloud with their children. The couple closes with homework for listeners: write down “love words” you’d like to hear from your spouse, and use that list to shape the words you offer them.

Topics discussed:

  • Tone of voice versus word choice
  • Jesus’s restraint in raising his voice
  • Elijah and the “still, small voice” of God
  • The lasting impact of hearing, or not hearing, “I love you” from a parent
  • Fathers praying aloud with their children
  • The fruit of the Spirit as a guide for speech
  • Harsh words versus encouraging words
  • A “love words” exercise for couples

Never Compare Your Spouse to Others

May 12, 2024 — Episode #19

Content note: candid discussion of pornography addiction, including statistics on children’s early exposure to explicit content.

Jerry and Becky Drace tackle a chapter on comparison, and much of the conversation centers on how pornography and unrealistic media images set marriages up to fail by comparison.

They cite statistics on the scale of pornography use in the U.S., including how young children are first exposed to it, and discuss it as a form of infidelity even without physical contact, tying the discussion back to the biblical story of David and Bathsheba. They also talk about appropriate dress, maintaining health and attractiveness for a spouse without obsessing over it, and the difference between outer beauty and inner character, referencing Proverbs 31 and Song of Solomon. Becky shares how her own experience with cancer and chemotherapy changed her physically without changing the couple’s commitment to each other, tying it back to 1 John’s teaching on not loving the things of the world.

Topics discussed:

  • Comparing a spouse to unrealistic media or pornographic images
  • Statistics on pornography use and addiction in the U.S.
  • Children’s early exposure to explicit content
  • Pornography as a form of infidelity
  • Modesty and appropriate dress
  • Maintaining health and attractiveness within marriage
  • Outer beauty versus inner character
  • Proverbs 31 and Song of Solomon on beauty and character

Keeping the Promises You Make

May 5, 2024 — Episode #18

With their 55th anniversary approaching, Jerry and Becky Drace walk through the traditional wedding vows line by line and ask why so many couples struggle to keep the promises they made on their wedding day.

They discuss the rise of cohabitation before marriage, the meaning behind vow phrases like “for better or worse” and “in sickness and in health” — including a story about a woman caring for her husband through a serious degenerative illness — and why forsaking “all others” applies to more than physical faithfulness alone. Jerry shares the sobering statistic that roughly 40% of the weddings he has personally performed have ended in divorce, even among couples who identified as Christian, and the couple discusses the difference between being sorry you got caught and being truly repentant. They close by distinguishing broken promises that are merely delayed from those that are outright denied.

Topics discussed:

  • The meaning behind each line of the traditional wedding vows
  • Cohabitation before marriage and shifting cultural standards
  • Caring for a spouse through serious illness
  • Divorce statistics among couples Jerry has married
  • The difference between being sorry and being repentant
  • Forsaking all others beyond physical faithfulness
  • Scripture on God’s promises never failing
  • Keeping smaller, everyday promises within a family

Don’t Be a Fault-Finder

April 28, 2024 — Episode #17

Jerry and Becky Drace explore the difference between having faults and constantly pointing them out, arguing a marriage can survive almost anything except a steady diet of criticism.

They discuss how patterns of blame often trace back to what a spouse witnessed growing up, and share a counseling story about a husband who had been unfaithful and a wife who struggled to recognize her own part in the relationship’s breakdown. They talk about loving a spouse “warts and all,” the importance of taking ownership rather than assigning blame, and a tip Jerry once gave their own daughter before she met her husband — writing down the qualities she hoped for in a future spouse. The episode ends with a challenge to list ten things you appreciate most about your spouse and give it to them as a gift.

Topics discussed:

  • Being described by your past without being defined by it
  • Taking ownership instead of assigning blame
  • Loving a spouse “warts and all”
  • How childhood patterns carry into adult marriages
  • Encouraging words versus words of condemnation
  • Guiding children toward wise choices in a future spouse
  • Ecclesiastes and Romans on kindness and honor in marriage
  • A “ten things I appreciate about you” exercise

Never Insult Your Spouse

April 21, 2024 — Episode #16

This week’s topic from Jerry and Becky Drace’s marriage book is blunt: never insult your spouse, publicly or privately.

They talk about how name-calling and belittling erode a marriage’s foundation, sharing stories (without naming names) of spouses who habitually put each other down — including one who never let her husband forget she thought his career change beneath him, until the marriage eventually ended. They discuss tone of voice as much as word choice, reading a poem about how identical words can wound or comfort depending on delivery, and offer three listening habits — repeating, rephrasing, and reflecting — drawn from Jerry’s seminary training in pastoral counseling. They also flag warning signs worth watching for early in a dating relationship, such as a partner who isolates, demeans, or tries to control their significant other.

Topics discussed:

  • The damage insults and name-calling do to a marriage
  • Warning signs of controlling or demeaning dating partners
  • Tone of voice versus word choice
  • Repeating, rephrasing, and reflecting as listening tools
  • Avoiding “you always” and “you never” accusations
  • Modeling respectful speech for children
  • Extending mercy rather than pointing out every fault
  • Proverbs and Matthew on the power of words

Scheduling Special Time With Your Spouse

April 14, 2024 — Episode #15

Jerry and Becky Drace explain why “special time” with a spouse has to be scheduled on purpose — because if it isn’t, life will quietly steal it away.

They share a letter from a career-driven couple who realized how much their success had cost them relationally, and warn against letting children, or an overloaded work schedule, gradually take over the space a marriage once occupied. They recall favorite getaways of their own — overseas mission trips, a favorite historic town, quiet evenings on their front porch — and reflect on a mass wedding event held during the recent solar eclipse as an example of intentionally creating shared memories. The episode closes with a walk through Ecclesiastes 3’s “a time for everything” and Ephesians 5:16’s call to redeem the time.

Topics discussed:

  • Why marriages tend to dissolve quietly rather than explosively
  • Letting children take over the space meant for the marriage
  • Carving out couple time despite demanding work schedules
  • Favorite shared travel memories
  • A mass wedding held during the solar eclipse
  • Ecclesiastes 3 and “a time for every purpose”
  • Redeeming the time from Ephesians 5
  • Revisiting the “dialogue daily, date weekly, depart quarterly” habit

The Art of Listening to Your Spouse

April 7, 2024 — Episode #14

Continuing their communication series, Jerry and Becky Drace zero in on listening — arguably the hardest half of any conversation.

They talk about the difference between intentional listening and half-listening, sharing a humorous highway-patrol story about a couple whose bickering revealed exactly who was really in charge in that relationship. They discuss why calm, measured voices tend to command more attention and respect than shouting, pointing to Jesus’s own teaching style as an example, and talk about the challenge of getting both children and spouses to look up from their phones. The episode also touches on family devotion habits, including a longtime practice of a quick morning phone call and prayer with their children no matter where Jerry was traveling.

Topics discussed:

  • The difference between hearing and truly listening
  • Body language and tone as forms of communication
  • Cell phone distractions during conversation
  • Soft-spoken versus loud communication styles
  • Modeling respectful listening for children
  • The value of eating meals together as a family
  • Daily phone-call devotions with children while traveling
  • Scripture on inclining your ear to wisdom

Learning to Really Communicate

March 31, 2024 — Episode #13

Content note: brief mention of the sudden death of a family member’s infant.

Jerry and Becky Drace dig into communication — the number one complaint they hear in marriage counseling — and why couples talk constantly before the wedding and so little a few years in.

They discuss how phones and social media have replaced face-to-face conversation, even at the dinner table, sharing stories of families sitting together in restaurants while everyone stares at a screen. They talk through common gender differences in communication styles, the importance of body language, and how listening for God through Scripture, prayer, and wise counsel mirrors listening well to a spouse. Becky also shares that the conversation comes on a hard day, as she and Jerry were preparing to attend a family funeral, and how a verse from James 4:10 spoke to her that morning.

Topics discussed:

  • Why communication tends to decline after the early years of marriage
  • Cell phones and social media replacing face-to-face conversation
  • Common differences in how husbands and wives communicate
  • Reading body language and nonverbal cues
  • Listening for God’s voice through Scripture and prayer
  • The “back off before you spout off” principle
  • Reminiscing about early attraction and first dates
  • Finding comfort in Scripture during a season of grief

Making Time for Your Spouse and Family

March 24, 2024 — Episode #12

This week Jerry and Becky Drace tackle a resource everyone has in equal measure but few manage well: time — personal time, couple time, and family time.

They swap stories about where each of them “pulls back” to recharge (a bathtub, a sewing room, a walk in the woods) and talk about why stay-at-home parenting deserves respect rather than apology. Jerry recalls a family-ministry challenge decades ago that first pointed him toward addressing family issues on the radio, and the couple shares the “dialogue daily, date weekly, depart quarterly” rhythm one long-married couple they know uses to stay connected. They close by urging listeners, fathers especially, not to give the best of their time to people who matter least while the ones who love them most wait for their attention.

Topics discussed:

  • Personal downtime and how each spouse recharges
  • Swapping babysitting to make couple time affordable
  • Encouraging and honoring stay-at-home parents
  • The “dialogue daily, date weekly, depart quarterly” rhythm
  • Cell phones and gadgets eating up family time
  • Favorite family vacation traditions and memories
  • Prioritizing time with children before they leave home
  • Making time for prayer and Scripture each day

The Power of Forgiveness in Marriage

March 17, 2024 — Episode #11

Content note: discussion of domestic/physical abuse in marriage, including guidance on safety planning.

Jerry and Becky Drace open their series on marriage-strengthening principles with what may be the hardest one to practice: forgiveness.

They share stories gathered from decades of marriage conferences — a husband who “buried the hatchet but not the handle,” a wife who confronted her ex-husband face-to-face years after his affair, and another who forgave a deceased spouse using an empty chair as a stand-in — illustrating that forgiveness is a choice, not just a feeling, and that offering it doesn’t guarantee it will be accepted. The conversation also turns candidly to physical abuse in marriage, addressing why victims often stay in dangerous situations and urging anyone in danger to make a safety plan and seek help. They close with five benefits of forgiveness drawn from Scripture, including Micah 7:18-19, Psalm 103:12, Isaiah 43:24, Psalm 86:5, and Romans 12:19.

Topics discussed:

  • Forgiveness as a choice rather than an emotion
  • “Burying the hatchet” versus truly letting go
  • Recognizing and responding to physical abuse in marriage
  • Extending forgiveness even when it isn’t received
  • The connection between mercy, compassion, and justice
  • Five biblical benefits of forgiveness
  • Forgiving a spouse who has already died
  • Scripture on God’s complete forgiveness of sin
